Hazardous substances are found in all work areas and if they are not properly managed, they will compromise the safey of human beings and property in the workplace. Hazardous substances need to be treated as a risk in the workplace. This includes processing, storing, handling and managing them correctly to avoid harm to workers, members of the public, property and the environment in general. The Hazardous Substances Act 15 of 1973 demands that hazardous substances should be controlled due to the fact that they may cause injury or ill-health to or death of human beings by reason of their toxic, corrosive, irritant, strongly sensitizing or flammable nature.

The purpose of this two days programme is to empower the qualifying learner with the competencies needed to effectively manage hazardous substances at work. Specifically, the skills acquired will assist the learners to be able to use, transport, store, handle and dispose of hazardous substances.

Identify and classify hazardous substances and dangerous goods in accordance with statutory requirements.

Apply the statutory requirements relevant to the control and management of hazardous material.

Module One: Identify and classify hazardous substances and dangerous goods in accordance with statutory requirements.

  • Identify the nine classes of hazardous substances and dangerous goods in terms of relevant legislation and regulation
  • Identify the groups of hazardous materials in terms of the health risks that they pose.
  • Describe the potential effects of each of the nine classes of hazards
  • Understand the dangers posed by hazardous/dangerous materials to humans and the environment

 

Module Two: Apply the statutory requirements relevant to the control and management of hazardous material. 

  • Explain the regulatory framework pertaining to the control and management of dangerous/hazardous materials.
  • Exploring the Safe working practices and procedures in the handling and storage of dangerous/hazardous materials according to statutory requirements.
  • Justify the choice of a particular method of handling and storage of hazardous material
  • Understanding hazardous substance handling procedures.
  • Using the appropriate handling equipment in terms of regulations and safety factors.
  • Describe the importance of safe transportation of hazardous material in relation to the impact that spillages could have on the environment.
  • Identify the documents required for the transportation of hazardous material to ensure compliance with the authorities
  • Using appropriate storage facilities and securing techniques to ensure that the dangerous/hazardous materials pose no danger to public or the environment.
  • Potential hazards related to handling and storage of dangerous/hazardous materials.
  • Perform disposal of dangerous/hazardous materials according to the regulatory requirements.
